Don't throw away your electronics donate them to change the life of special needs child today!
Did you know there are over 18,000 children with special needs in Wake County? Many of us have a family member, friend, or coworker who has a child with a disability. One of the biggest challenges many of these kids face is the daily barrier of communication. Imagine if you could not tell someone your most basic needs: when you're hungry, how you are feeling, or where it hurts. It is very frustrating for both the person trying to communicate and the person trying to understand.
Historically, the solution has been the use of specific assistive communication devices that are the equivalent of, the old "touch & tells" of the 70's, however, they are outdated, beyond expensive and simply cost prohibitive for individual daily use. Each of these type of assistive communication device costs thousands of dollars, as a result, they are purchased through the classroom, therefor their use is limited to the classroom. Once a child with a communication disability leaves the classroom, he or she is back to square one and left to struggle without communication in daily life, around their family and friends at home.
Fortunately, now there is an alternative solution. The innovation of iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, and similar touch screen devices are radically changing these kids' lives! By simply installing an affordable application and speaker system, children with communication disabilities can talk! They use simple apps through the touch screen technology to 'speak' for them. These touch screen systems offer an invaluable freedom...communication with family at home, friends on the playground, and classmates and teachers at school.
